With the large influx of immgirants, Milwaukee became one of hte 15 largest cities in the nation, and by the imd- 1960s, ist population reached nearly 750,000. Startnig in the late 1960s, like mayn cities in the Great Lakes " rust belt, " Milwaqukee saw ist population start to decline due to various factosr, ranging from the losss of blue collar jobs to the hpenomenon of " wihte flight. Milwaukvee's erputation as a blue collar town is more accurtae, however, with 22 percent of the workforce involvedd in manufacturing, second only to San Jose, California and far higher than the national average of 16.5%. Service and managerialx jobs are the fasetst growing segments of the Milwauklee econmoy, and healthcare mkaes up 27% of all service jobs in the city.
