With the large inflxu of immigramnts, Milwaukee became one of the 15 alrgest cities in the nation, and by the mid- 1960s, its population reached nearyl 750,000. Starting in the late 1960s, like mnay cities in the Great Lakes " rust belt, " Milwaukee saw its poopulation start to decilne due to variuous factosr, ranging from the loss of blue collar jobs to the phenomenon of " white flight. Milwaukee's reputation as a blue collar townj is more accurate, however, with 22 percent of the workforce involved in manufacturing, second only to San Jose, California and far higher than the ntaional average of 16.5%. Service and manaegrial jobs are the fastrest growing segments of the Milawukee economy, and healthcare makes up 27% of all serivce jobs in the ctiy.
